Today’s headlines News headlines Monday September 10, 2018 08:53:53The WNBA is making a big splash this year.
It’s expected to earn $9.7 billion for the season, up from $7.7 million last year.
But some fans are still looking for a bigger payday.
WNBA Commissioner Cheryl Boone Isaacs is touting a billion-dollar season as the league’s most profitable yet, citing a 10-percent jump in sponsorship revenue and a 20 percent increase in local TV ratings.
“Our viewership continues to grow and it’s also our audience that’s going to be the biggest beneficiary of the WNBA,” Boone Isaac said during a press conference this week.
“And we’re going to keep growing it as long as we keep doing it.”
The WNBA’s TV ratings are expected to reach more than 100 million households, more than double the network’s previous high of about 100 million.
Boone Isaak also said that the league has expanded its sponsorship base to include some brands like Nike, McDonalds, and PepsiCo.
According to WNBA.com, the WNBL has a record-breaking average attendance of 3,918 fans per game.
The league is averaging 4.6 million fans a game this year, the most ever for a single WNBA season.
Boone also said the league will bring back the traditional marquee events like the Final Four and the Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2004.
“It’s great that we’re starting to grow again, and we’re not doing it as fast as we could have done last year,” Boone said.
“I think our fans are going to enjoy what they’re seeing on TV again this year.”
Boone said the WnB has a new commissioner in her boss, Julie Foudy, who is expected to make the jump to the NBA next year.
Boone said Foudo has an outstanding record of supporting the WNT, including hosting the team’s preseason camp in Las Vegas.
WNBDomsWnB will also get an increase in revenue thanks to the growth of the league.
WnBsports.com reports that the WNAB will earn $3.5 million this year compared to last year’s $2.8 million.
WNABsports also says that the League is also getting a boost from increased ticket sales thanks to higher-than-average prices.
The WNBA is expected get an additional $1 million in revenues, according to The Associated Press.
Some fans are also worried that the increased TV ratings won’t be enough to offset the increased costs of the teams salary cap.
“I just don’t want to pay the salaries of my kids and grandkids because the WNs salary cap isn’t enough to pay all of the players’ salaries,” WNBA fan Brandon L. wrote in an e-mail.
One fan told The Associated Post that she would prefer to watch the WWNBA on ESPN instead of ESPN2.
“We all know that WNBIAS live broadcast is the WORST of the sports on ESPN,” she said.
