With United not set to play their first home game of the season on Saturday, it will be up to Kante to start the week’s games.
With his recovery from a hip injury continuing to slow down, and United needing to secure a clean sheet against the Blues, the Frenchman has a big decision to make.
With Louis van Gaal having already revealed he will be keeping a close eye on Kante, the Belgium international could yet play for the first time in the Premier League next month.
But with a possible injury to another player, such as the attacking midfielder, United could be forced to wait for Kante’s return to play before making any decision on his availability.
United are likely to be without forward Nani, who is out for six months with a knee injury.
The 28-year-old has been ruled out of this weekend’s game against Chelsea with a thigh problem.
The Blues have been keen on signing Kante and the forward is believed to be ready to return to action.
Kante has played more than 100 times for the club, scoring nine goals and assisting seven, but United are unlikely to be able to afford the France international, especially after his return from injury.
United have a number of options at forward, with Luke Shaw, Nani and Matteo Darmian all likely to leave the club this summer.
But United are in need of an attacking threat, and with Luke Rooney expected to move on from Old Trafford next month, the squad needs an experienced striker.
With Van Gaal expected to keep a close watch on Kance, the former Ajax and France international could find himself back in the first team next month should he recover well enough.
