The former coach of the NCAA mens tennis team has admitted he was “fans” of the team that won the title in 2019.
Former head coach and current president of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Eric Van de Beijer has admitted that he was not the most popular person in the team and said fans “don’t believe in the results”.
“I have been criticised a lot for my decisions but I think there are people who don’t like me because I’m a coach,” Van de Baer said on Sunday.
“I was always in the shadow of my team and they had the chance to win but it wasn’t my fault.
They didn’t believe the results.”
The former head coach of UNSW Sydney and Queensland’s women’s tennis team, Van de Bals, was appointed head coach at UNSW in 2014 after his departure from the men’s team.
He has since won seven Australian singles titles and three world championships and also coached the women’s team in the 2017-18 and 2019-20 seasons.
In his new role as a full-time coach, Van De Baer has a responsibility for the women and men’s teams in the UNSW and Queensland tennis programs, and has been involved in their national tournaments.
“It is a good opportunity to work with a team which is also full of very talented players, and a great support system,” Van De Beijers said in a statement.
“I’m very excited to be working with the Sydney women’s and Queensland men’s coaches who have been working together for many years.”
Van de Bums new job comes amid a spate of high profile scandals in tennis and sport in general.
Last month, a US court ruled that former Australian women’s world number one Nadal and Australian champion Andy Murray had broken anti-doping rules after they failed a drug test at the US Open.
Murray was suspended for three years for the first time since his retirement from tennis in December 2020, while Nadal was banned for life from all professional tennis activities and the ATP Tour for four years.
Van de Baers decision comes amid the ongoing controversy around Australian tennis and has not gone unnoticed by former tennis players and fans.
Former Australian tennis players Rod Laver and Michael Hussey, as well as current Australian tennis player and commentator Gary Hart, were among the tennis players to express their disappointment in Van de Baal’s move.
“When you have people in that position, it is not going to sit well with the people that you love,” Hussey said on Twitter.
“We need to make sure that people are safe on the court, that people can trust the team.
You can’t do that when you are in the position you are.”
Van De Bejaers statement on his new job follows a series of allegations and allegations made against him.
Ahead of his resignation as UNSW head coach, Australian women tennis player Michelle King said she was “absolutely appalled” at the news and the Australian Open’s governing body was “appalled” by the move.
In a statement, UNSW said:”We are aware of the allegations relating to Mr Van deBaer and will be looking into the matter in the coming days.”
The Australian Open said it “is fully supportive of UNSC’s investigation and is working closely with the NSW Police and the NSW Rugby League”.
